Your steel. Your carbon footprint. Your benchmark: EMW SCALE

Verified emissions management from raw material to product

The transformation to a climate-neutral industry requires reliable figures instead of just labels. With EMW SCALE – Steel Carbon Accounting & Low Emission – EMW Steel Service Centre presents a scientifically based, verified accounting model that precisely documents and allocates emissions along the supply chain. EMW SCALE is thus setting new standards in cooperation with business partners.

The foundation of EMW SCALE is a batch-specific CO2e recording according to the cradle-to-gate principle, i.e. from ore mining to delivery of the processed products to EMW customers. All emissions from raw material extraction, pig iron production and transport through to processing in the EMW plants are taken into account. The system is based on recognised standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standard (GHG) and ISO 22095 for complete proof of origin along the supply chain (Chain of Custody).

At the heart of the system is the linking of each batch with a verified environmental declaration – to be more precise: the EPD value (Environmental Product Declaration) of the respective supplier. If this is below the reference value (product group-specific) of EMW Steel Service Centre, the difference is recorded as real CO2e savings in an internal, regularly updated and externally monitored CO2e bank. This value can be specifically allocated to the balance sheet at the customer’s request.

This creates order-related product carbon footprints (PCF), which separate physical emissions from the carbon benefits of low-emission upstream products – traceable, documented and directly applicable for ESG reports and CBAM requirements (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism).

CO2e bank with real value claim

The CO2e bank from EMW SCALE follows a consistent debit/credit principle that ensures maximum transparency and integrity. The basis for each CO2e credit is an actually measurable and documented difference between product-specific emission values and the respective reference values based on recognised EPDs. Only proven reductions in emissions from the upstream value chain – for example through optimised primary materials or energy-efficient processing – are recorded as CO2e credits in the bank.

Any exaggeration or embellishment of figures is systematically excluded: The CO2e accounts are regularly monitored, verified for plausibility, and documented, ensuring traceability for customers, auditors, and authorities at all times.

Customers receive only CO2e-reduced products for which the desired reduction in emissions has been logged in the associated CO2e account and externally verified. Each allocation is data-based, transparent and traceable – an issue without coverage is not possible. This protects against “greenwashing”, pseudo-instruments or unclear compensation models – all in all, a reliable contribution to the decarbonisation of supply chains.

Maximum compatibility for products and supply chains

With its modular architecture, EMW SCALE is flexibly scalable, future-proof and ready for the next stage of development – from manual recording to a seamlessly digitalised CO2e data infrastructure in the steel processing industry. The system is fully applicable to all steel grades and product groups – from cold-rolled and hot-rolled products to surface-finished products with a classic hot-dip galvanised or zinc-magnesium coating.

Thanks to its universal system architecture, SCALE means that there are no compromises that need to be made in terms of quality, grades or variable batch sizes, even in the long term. Customers receive their products in the usual range and specification, supplemented with a transparent, auditable CO2e sustainability profile. This makes climate transparency an integral part of the supply chain, without operational restrictions.

One system for all sectors: Industry, trade and technology

EMW SCALE is designed to reliably fulfil the requirements of a wide range of industries – from the automotive industry to mechanical and plant engineering to metal processing in the construction industry, the skilled trades and the technical supply chain. Whether OEM, Tier 1 supplier or medium-sized industrial partner: Companies receive reliable, production-specific CO2e emissions data at the touch of a button – traceable, auditable and prepared for practical use. This makes EMW SCALE an ideal solution for:

  • Sustainability reports in accordance with the CSRD regulation

  • Customer requirements in CO2e-based tenders

  • Taxonomy-compliant purchasing and delivery strategies

  • CO2e footprint at plant, product or batch level

  • Strategic decarbonisation targets in production and procurement

Verified system – fully functional and future-proof

EMW SCALE is not a static model. It is open to the integration of new technologies to reduce emissions – for example through the use of direct reduction plants with hydrogen or the use of electric arc furnaces. With every reduction at the steelworks, the CO2e footprint of the products that customers purchase from EMW also decreases – demonstrably and with a secure balance sheet. New guidelines and regulations or rule adjustments can also be mapped, ensuring the future viability of this accounting system for the coming decades.

The CO2e data is based on an in-house developed calculation model that can be used across all sectors and has been verified by an independent testing organisation in accordance with international standards. All calculations are fully documented, specific to product groups, transparently traceable and can be used in daily practice – whether for internal control units, in reporting or for communication with customers, investors and authorities.

EMW SCALE therefore combines regulatory compliance with operational applicability – regardless of industry, company size or digital maturity level. In a dynamic market environment, companies need partners who can map responsibility in a technical, verifiable and comprehensible way.

That’s why EMW SCALE is more than just a calculation tool. It is a reliable system that creates clarity. Customers receive a verifiable CO2e certificate from EMW for each delivery – with separate proof of CO2e reduction, broken down by material group, batch and scope. Integration into tender documents or ESG reports is seamless – ready for any inspection requirement.

Responsibility made measurable

With SCALE, EMW offers a system that not only balances CO2e emissions, but also transforms them into a controllable, operationally usable instrument. It facilitates the transition from abstract key figures to concrete actionability – along real supply chains and with documented emissions data.

The steel industry in particular needs trustworthy CO2e reduction certificates with measurable added value – for internal CO2e balances as well as for regulatory requirements, tenders and customer requirements.

EMW SCALE focuses on safe, emission-reduced steel procurement. The system is marketable and ready for use. At the same time, it combines industry, regulation and market responsibility. The result: Transparency, sustainability and trust in the decarbonisation of metal value chains.
