Which Steel Sheet Blank for Which Application?

Each type and grade of steel offers specific advantages in terms of strength, weight, corrosion resistance, and cost – making it suitable for different applications.

When processing steel sheet blanks, EMW ensures that customer-specific requirements are met so that the optimal grade is always used for their production. This is guaranteed by our comprehensive and precise quality control.

The following examples provide an overview of which steel types and grades are best suited for various fields of application:

Hot-Rolled Steel

  • Construction Industry: Hot-rolled steel is frequently used for load-bearing structures such as steel beams and support columns due to its high tensile strength and toughness.
  • Heavy Industry: In the mechanical engineering and shipbuilding industries, hot-rolled steel sheet blanks are in high demand thanks to their durability and ability to withstand heavy loads.

Cold-Rolled Steel

  • Automotive Industry: Cold-rolled steel is ideal for car body parts, as it offers high strength and formability even at reduced thickness. This helps reduce vehicle weight, contributing to improved fuel efficiency.
  • Electrical Industry: Cold-rolled steel is also a great choice for manufacturing refrigerators, washing machines, and other household appliances. The steel sheet blanks offer high dimensional accuracy, and their smooth surface makes them particularly well-suited for these applications.

Electro-Galvanized Steel

  • Electronics Industry: Electro-galvanized steel is commonly used in the production of electronic devices such as computers and televisions. Steel sheet blanks of this grade offer excellent surface quality and corrosion resistance.
  • Automotive Industry: Electro-galvanized steel sheet blanks are also widely used in the automotive industry for components such as seat structures and other interior parts. Here too, the superior surface finish is a key advantage.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel

  • Automotive Industry: Hot-dip galvanized steel provides excellent corrosion protection and is therefore commonly used for vehicle underbody components.
  • Construction Industry: Due to its weather resistance, hot-dip galvanized steel is used in outdoor structures such as bridges, metal-clad buildings, and fences.

Additional Grades for Steel Sheet Blanks

(Standard, deep-drawing, microalloyed, high-strength, and ultra-high-strength grades)

  • Automotive Industry: High-strength and ultra-high-strength grades are used for manufacturing automotive components that require increased strength, reduced weight, and enhanced safety features – such as bumpers and door pillars.
  • Aerospace Industry: Microalloyed steels are often used in the aerospace sector, where high strength combined with weight reduction is essential.

Perforated Sheets

(made from various materials such as aluminium, steel, and stainless steel)

  • Architecture and Construction: Perforated sheets are used in façades, sun protection systems, ventilation systems, and for decorative purposes.
  • Industrial Filtration: In industries such as food and beverage, chemicals, and water treatment, perforated sheets are used for filtration applications.
