How SCALE works:

From the source to the factory gate (cradle-to-gate)

• Batch-specific data basis: Each batch is linked to a verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) from the supplier. This results in the physical PCF of the raw material up to processing at EMW.
• CO₂e bank based on the debit/credit principle: Actual emission reductions compared to EMW reference values (specific to product groups) are stored as credits – externally monitored, validated and protected against double counting. Uncovered expenditure is not possible.
• Accountable advantages: On request, EMW assigns verifiable CO₂e reductions from a delivery to its accounts – transparently, traceably and audited.

Standards, verification

& System integration

SCALE is based on international standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and DIN EN ISO 22095 (Chain of Custody); it is verified by an independent testing organisation. The data structure is SAP-compatible and systematically maps all relevant CO₂e transactions from goods receipt to customer reports (currently Excel-based, prepared for IT integration).

The PCF data provided by SCALE can be integrated into life cycle assessment (LCA) models and supports multi-recycling approaches by providing transparent, reusable emissions information – from the primary stage to the recycling cycle.

Practical example

Galvanised sheet material

A customer wants to purchase galvanised sheet material with a CO2e reduction. The selected batch comes from a plant with certified direct reduction. The EPD value is significantly below the verified material reference value. This difference is recorded in the CO2e bank and can be used for the specific order. The customer receives clear documentation with the physical PCF value, the CO2e reduction in tonnes and proof of the chain of custody.

SCALE is not a static model: new technologies (e.g. H₂ direct reduction, EAF) and current regulations can be integrated. With every verifiable reduction in emissions in steel production, the footprint of the products supplied by EMW decreases – both physically and in terms of carbon accounting.
